Turbulent Times and Modern Art

This 3-hour Master Class analyzes the artistic production and personality of one of the most influential Spanish painters, Francisco de Goya (1746-1828).

Our itinerary starts at the Royal Academy of Arts (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando), which will help us contextualize Goya's style and career within that prestigious institution. We will have the opportunity to examine some paintings by Goya, as well as a selection of his original etching plates, which are on display at the Calcografía Nacional.

From the Royal Academy, we will head to the Prado Museum, which holds the most important body of works by the artist: from his earlier designs for the Royal Family to his dark and haunting Black Paintings. We will discuss the development and the main events of the War of Independence against the Napoleonic troops, which Goya depicted so vividly in his canvases and etchings.

The subjects portrayed by Goya are intrinsically linked to his life in Madrid as a court artist and as a direct witness to the popular uprising against the French in 1808. This Master Class provides you with insight into the turbulent life and times of Goya, as well as the pervading influence he holds upon Modern and Contemporary Art.

This is a quality learning experience designed and led by a professional, fully qualified Art History university professor, Dr. Almudena Cros (BA Hons, MA, PhD Warwick University), with extensive teaching experience and specialist knowledge.  Her teaching experience includes being an Art History professor at the Madrid campus for two American universities: Saint Louis University and Suffolk University (where she taught for 13 years).

Group tour prices:

2 people: €90 per person
3 people: €80 per person
4 people: €70 per person
5 people: €60 per person
6 people: €50 per person

Guaranteed private tour: 

If you would like a guaranteed private tour, a supplement of €70 will be added to the total price.  The cost for a private tour for 1 person will be the same price as for 2 people, and it will be €180 plus €70 = €250.

Solo travellers: If you are on your own but want to book a group tour and nobody else signs up, we will run a private tour for €180.

Family Special offer (guaranteed private tour):

For family units of up to 6 members,  including 1 or more children under 18 years of age: €250 flat fee per family.*

* Please note that this tour is not recommended for children under 14.

Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando admission tickets of €8 per adult and Prado tickets of €15 per adult are NOT included in the price.

Please bring a photograph of your passport to qualify for reduced or free admission to the Museum (over 65 years old, children under 18, or students with a valid College or University ID)
