Turbulent Times and Modern Art
This 3-hour Master Class analyzes the artistic production and personality of one of the most influential Spanish painters, Francisco de Goya (1746-1828).
Our itinerary starts at the Royal Academy of Arts (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando), which will help us contextualize Goya's style and career within that prestigious institution. We will have the opportunity to examine some paintings by Goya, as well as a selection of his original etching plates, which are on display at the Calcografía Nacional. ...Description continued below

TOUR DESCRIPTION CONTINUED:
From the Royal Academy, we will head to the Prado Museum, which holds the most important body of works by the artist: from his earlier designs for the Royal Family to his dark and haunting Black Paintings. We will discuss the development and the main events of the War of Independence against the Napoleonic troops, and which Goya depicted so vividly in his canvases and etchings.
The subjects portrayed by Goya are intrinsically linked to his life in Madrid as a court artist and as a direct witness of the popular uprising against the French in 1808. This Master Class provides you with the insight into the turbulent life and times of Goya, as well as the pervading influence he holds upon Modern and Contemporary Art.
